Gouache Landscape
Several people have accessed my web site over the last few years as a result of doing web searches on painting in gouache (pronounced « gwosh », or « goo-wash »), probably lead there by the numerous gouache paintings listed on the site. 19 20 Painters who have written theoretical works on painting include Kandinsky and Paul Klee 21 22 In his essay, Kandinsky maintains that painting has a spiritual value, and he attaches primary colors to essential feelings or concepts, something that Goethe and other writers had already tried to do. The support for paintings includes such surfaces as walls , paper , canvas , wood, glass , lacquer , pottery , leaf , copper and concrete, and the painting may incorporate multiple other materials including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf, as well as objects. Gouache is a medium that is often overlooked, particularly when it comes to painting landscapes, even though many artists, notably John Singer Sargent and Turner, have used it. White gouache is often used for highlights in watercolour painting in preference to white watercolour or Chinese white, because of its far superior covering power. Some modern painters incorporate different materials such as metal, plastic, sand , cement , straw , leaves or wood for their texture Examples of this are the works of Jean Dubuffet and Anselm Kiefer There is a growing community of artists who use computers to « paint » color onto a digital « canvas » using programs such as Adobe Photoshop , Corel Painter , and many others. I have never had this problem, but then I don’t use a lot of gouache from tubes added directly with acrylic paint, only small amounts. You can use any gouache, but water-based gouache blends more evenly and has more possibilities compared to acrylic. The dextrin replaced older paint types based on hide glue or size During the twentieth century, gouache began to be specially manufactured in tubes for more refined artistic purposes. These have been a great help in predicting the results of placing a mixed color into a painting. You can also create a background using watercolors that will then be added to with gouache. The third reason I prefer to acrylic varnish over gouache is the richness and depth it brings to the color qualities of the finished product. Much has changed in terms of mediums that can be used with them to either speed up or slow down their drying time. Landscape painting enjoys a long and honorable history in art, going as far back as ancient times, when the Greeks and Romans made frescoes of pleasant vistas and enchanting gardens. |
